Der Freischütz

At its premiere in 1821, “Der Freischütz” was greeted with frenzy as the first German national opera.

Good and evil are clearly defined here, as are honor and dishonor; The men are complete men with weapons in their hands, the women are naive females with intuitions. The good, pious rural society stands in contrast to the irrational, unleashed nature of the Wolfsschlucht, which has its origins in the horror fairy tales of the time it was created. Ersan Mondtag returns to Kassel for this production and transforms the mysterious fairy tale about the hunter Max and the cursed free balls into a contemporary drama about fear, dreams and the uncanny.
